Luckily, there are two options for featuring these favors at your event. For those of you who don’t trust your craft skills or just don’t want to devote time and energy to the project, cootie catchers can be ordered through Etsy and are relatively inexpensive.

However, if you are looking to save money and come out with stylish, unique, and eye catching catchers, there are tons of templates to chose from, one of which can be found here. Whichever route you decide, these favors are sure to be a hit at your special celebration!

Cupcakes
2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
12 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 cups firmly packed light brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
4 eggs
1 1/2 cups buttermilk, at room temperature

Whipped Cream Frosting
1 3/4 cups plus 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
3 tablespoons powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 tablespoons Oreo cookie crumbs

Garnish
24 Oreo cookie halves

Preheat oven to 350 F. Line 24 muffin cups with paper liners.

In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt; set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the butter on medium speed until smooth. Gradually add the brown sugar and continue beating until fluffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Beat in the vanilla. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

With the mixer on low speed, add the flour mixture in three additions, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix just until all the dry ingredients have been incorporated, being careful not to overmix.

Divide the batter between the prepared cups. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 18-20 minutes. Transfer the cupcakes to a wire rack and let cool to room temperature.

To make the frosting: In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine the whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium-high speed until the whipped cream holds stiff peaks. Gently fold in the cookie crumbs with a rubber spatula.

Transfer the whipped cream to a pastry bag and pipe frosting decoratively on top of the cupcakes. Garnish with Oreo cookie halves.

Makes 24 cupcakes.

Brides Against Breast Cancer

To begin, you will need:

24-30 perfectly ripened strawberries, green caps intact
6 oz (.375 lb) sweet, semi-sweet, bitter sweet, milk and/or white chocolate. Preferably chocolate chips, or chocolate bars coarsely chopped (Chocolate chips are the best way to melt chocolate).  

Food coloring and/or colored candy pieces  

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt chips using either the defrost setting or 10-percent power in the microwave. Use two to three minute increments until smooth.  

There is a technique involved to perfect chocolate-covered strawberries. When you dip the strawberry into the melted chocolate, give it a little shake as you withdraw it. This will fill in all the cracks and leave a nice, even line of chocolate at the base. When the strawberry is completely withdrawn from the chocolate, swirl it in a quick, clockwise motion to “spin” the dripping chocolate off.

Invert the hand, pointing the strawberry at the ceiling, to seal it and allow you to sprinkle other candies or toppings around the surface.

Cool covered strawberries on a sheet pan with wax paper. Keep them at a cool room temperature and try to dip them the same day you serve them.

For Tuxedo Strawberries, dip strawberries in both white and dark chocolate to create a tuxedo effect. Dip in white first, let the chocolate dry, then dip twice in dark chocolate (once on each side to create a V of white), giving them that little shake to keep a straight line. Buttons and a bow tie can easily be added with the tip of a toothpick.

For baby showers or any other type of gathering, you can color co-ordinate your strawberries to match your color scheme by simply using food coloring to dye white chocolate in which to dip the strawberries.  Or, if you are not partial to white chocolate (which shouldn’t be considered chocolate in this chocolate lover’s opinion) simply use candy pieces in the color of your choosing.  It will really give your celebration a sense of indulgence without acquiring that ouch pricing.

The needed supplies for making these candle favors:
Wax, Wicks, Favor Containers (we suggest these, A Wax Melter, A Large Pot, Fragrances, Dyes

1) Spread newspapers over the candle making area. You may wish to double or triple layer so that any spills will not damage the table surface you are working on.

2) Begin to melt your wax. It is easiest to place a wax melter in a large pot half-filled with water on a burner over low-medium heat. Gradually place wax pieces into the melter. If you do not have a melter, another small metal pot or bowl will work fine. When the wax has melted, you can add coloring or fragrance to coordinate with your theme/color scheme.

3) Cut pre-tabbed wicks to ½ inch above the container edge and place them in the center of the containers. Pour the wax mixture over and let stand for twelve hours.

4) While the wax cools, design and print out the labels that will go onto the favor top. Since we are using the round favor tins, we suggest the Wilton template . If you are using a different size or style, be sure to find out what template works best for your favor. Usually, this information can be found with the product information or on the maker’s website.

5) Once the candles have completely hardened, place the favor tin lid onto the tin securely and affix the label to the top. Now you have a favor that is not only eye catching, but also unique and affordable. (These are also great favor ideas for baby showers and Girls Night Out)
