Honeymoon Hiatus- Sultry Savannah

Posted on February 9th, 2009 by nisha  |  No Comments »

For anyone who has read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the detail of gorgeous Spanish moss-draped oak trees and thick floral-scented breezes must have stirred a deep longing to see the place described in such delicious words. The real Savannah, Georgia certainly lives up to the lusciousness to which author, John Berendt attributes to this lovely city, but Savannah is so much more than visual and sensual offerings of the written word could ever hope to capture.

Established in 1733, Savannah is known as America’s first planned city. Savannah has one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States (designated in 1966) and attracts millions of visitors who enjoy the city’s classic architecture and historic structures. Internationally labeled “Hostess City of the South”, Savannah does it’s best to live up to the title by offering more than 150 festivals a year, a tour for practically every possible interest, 45 historic inns that recall the charm and elegance of the old south, and countless venues to enjoy art, music, and theater.

For lovers of legend and fantasy, scheduling a day to visit the famed Pirate House, a restaurant and former tavern once frequented by Caribbean pirates (also the inspiration for the beloved novel, Treasure Island) will be certain to stir a thrill and satisfy that peculiar adventure-craving. If the supernatural or historic is more to you and your love’s taste, perhaps a stroll through one of the numerous city squares featuring monuments and gorgeous buildings marked with the noticeably similar blue/green hue (known to the locals as “Haint Blue”) will whisk you back to a time when Yamacraw Indian Chief Tomochichi (the rumored to be over 7-feet-tall) still walked the area and African slaves painted doorways and window sills to ward off evil spirits.

Or maybe you and your love have no particular purpose in mind? Maybe you just want to spend your time lounging, strolling or taking in the southern ambiance? Well, Savannah’s numerous diversions can help you do just that. Start the day with a walk around the reputed public gardens, swing by the latest exhibit from the graduates of Savannah College of Art and Design, and top of your morning with a mouth-watering southern breakfast similar to the Savannah native and cooking queen, Paula Deen’s.

By afternoon, you and your honey could head out to the sea to sample some Georgian coast fun at Tybee Island, Savannah’s beach. You could relax on the shore enjoying the Atlantic breeze, board a Savannah Belles Ferry to visit the outer Golden Isles of St. Simon and Jekyll (good for all of you history lovers), and get a taste of the eclectic yet flavorful Gullah, Savannah, and Coastal-mix cuisine. Then, once you have filled yourselves with scrumptious Savannah-style fair, an hour or two spent basking in aural pleasure via one of the numerous jazz and blues clubs to be found throughout the city is all it will take to set a sensual mood so sexy, it will have you both dancing long after the hotel room door closes.

Southern comfort, good food, and hot nights, what more could you ask for on your honeymoon?

Showers Top Five: Honeymoon Hotspots

Posted on January 28th, 2009 by nisha  |  No Comments »

We’ve written about a lot of different locations in our two years of blogging for Showers, and in those two years, we’ve come across a few places that really hold a special place in our hearts. Whether chosen for ambiance, weather, or really awesome sites, at least one of these Top Five Honeymoon Hotspots are sure to offer up exactly what the newlyweds prescribe.

Jamaica- Sun and Yum-Yum

In case you don’t know us by now, we love to eat. And we can do R&R with the best of them; so naturally, we LOVE the island of Jamaica. From gorgeous waterfalls to the laid-back attitude that claims every effort is ‘no problem’, Jamaica is the perfect place for relaxing on sunny beaches and feasting on succulent Caribbean food. Really, what getaway could be more perfect? But if you require a bit more from your own visit, exploring the gorgeous waterfalls, listening to live music, and visiting historic towns is sure to offer up the variety you crave.

Miami, FL- Fun, Spice, and Hotness

Between swaying palms, vibrant streets, and lots of cultural flavor, the South Beach experience is one you will never forget. It is one of the few places where you can truly be pampered, party with the wildest, and feel like there are no other people in the world. When honeymoons are about having everything you need at your fingertips while enjoying time with your honey, Miami is the backyard playground you’ve been itching to explore.

San Francisco, CA- The Cultural Amusement Park

Being California natives, I guess this choice is just a little bit biased. But so what? After almost 10 years living outside of the Golden State, we’ve discovered a new appreciation for the coveted, dream inducing state. And, you’d be hard-pressed to find fault with our love of San Francisco. With its diversity, bustling energy, and glittery nightlife, San Francisco appeals to the curious cosmopolitan in us all.

Venice, Italy- Ah, L’Amore

Venice…romance, gorgeous surroundings, Italian food, mandolins at sunset. I think that pretty much says it all, don’t you?

Monaco- The French Riviera Playground.

If we could pick a place where we could be pampered, eat only the finest, drink only the finest, be surrounded by only the finest, and money is no object (even if it was for just once in our life-time), Monaco would be our destination of choice. It is known as the playground for the rich and famous, though it can be fairly affordable if you budget just right. Monaco combines natural beauty with elegance, relaxation and pleasures of every type for the sensual palette. A girl can dream, can’t she?

Honeymoon Hiatus- Fantastical Phuket

Posted on January 2nd, 2009 by nisha  |  No Comments »

If you are looking for a location that offers lots of relaxation but is extremely gorgeous and fun, Thailand’s ‘Jewel of the Andaman’ or Phuket is an excellent choice. Phuket—pronounced Foo-ket—is reputed to have an exciting mix of stunning coastline, hotels, fantastic diving and day trips to sunny islands. Also, if you would like to add a bit of the city’s energy to your honeymoon, Phuket’s exciting night scene is sure to satisfy all of your good-time tastes. After perusing 1 Stop Phuket, a onestop spot for information on Phuket, we have picked out the highlights to honeymooning in this gorgeous location.

Things To See: Stunning views can be seen above Kata Bay: Phuket Town, with it’s old traditional Thai character that suggests what the island was like before the tourists arrive: The Soaring Chedi (The grandest and most visited of the Buddhist temples on the island) at Wat Chalong: Heroines Monument- just a short distance from the airport, a circle enclosing the statues of two sisters who saved the island from marauding Burmese. At Talang Road you’ll find grand Sino-Portuguese styled mansions in various states of repair.

Old Phuket Town

Beaches To Visit: Bang Tao (boasts the pretty lagoons behind), Patong (often the most central and busiest), North beaches of Nai Yang and Mai Khao (remote and uncrowded), Pha Nga Bay (home of the karst pillars), and Promthep Cape.

Pha Nga Bay

Entertainment: Phuket Fantasea- a Vegas-style extravaganza staged every evening in a large auditorium/theme park (1,500baht). Orchid Garden and Thai Village- regular cultural shows demonstrating traditional Thai dance and music (600baht). Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, a protected sanctuary with two lovely waterfalls, offers the best of Phuket’s lush landscape (200baht).

Phuket Fantasea

Night Life: Patong is party centre, a busy and heavily-developed area that will excite the party-goers and repel those looking for quiet paradise. Some notable bars are: Dragon: located above Soi Easy is arguably the best Go Go Bar on Phuket. Aussie Bar: as the name suggests, this bar caters to a largely Australian crowd and is a great place to catch sporting events, especially rugby and Aussie Rules Football. The Shipwreck Inn: located on Bangla road; this is a great place to get away from the crowds and is ideally placed for people watching. (extensive list of bars) For Gay and Lesbian centered excitement, Patong beach, and in and around Paradise Complex are the best places to go. There are plenty of gay-friendly hotels and guesthouses, clubs, massage parlors, go-go bars, discos, as well as restaurants and small bars in the area, where you can meet other gays and lesbians. Some of the most popular clubs and bars are My Way, Passport, Spartacus, Tang Mo, and Tarzan Bar.

Patong Nightlife

With so much to choose from, it’s hard to imagine any honeymooner and travel-lover returning home unhappy from the excursion. There were just too many to name, so for further information on Food and hotel venues and price ranges, or any other bit of Phuket life, please visit 1 Stop Phuket.
